i marked the poem
with the only thing
i had available--
a scrap of
toilet paper--
i folded it over &
fit it into the
binding of
the book
to mark the place
where eternity was
explained &
defined
it seems ironic
in a strangely ironic
world that the
symbol for eternity
& infinity is
a dead 8 rolled on
its side

DWC - After a couple reads, I realized with bemusement that you were reading the book in the bathroom. Which we all do, of course, but still chuckle about like fifth graders.
That said... I really dug the infinity imagery. The concept has long been an obsession of mine. Interesting, too, that you portray it as being the remnants of a defeated number.
i almost wrote "stuck it into the crack of the book" but i thought that might too much and make it a really bad poem. buy yes, i was in the bathroom reading some Franz Wright
Ha! Yes, I'm glad you didn't use the word "crack" here. Would've been good for a laugh, but then the rest of the message wouldn't have resonated as clearly.
